The alarm goes off at
6:30am. The morning is clear and chilly. Here we have just crossed
Bealey River.
-
We ride quite a while in the
chilly morning air until the Sun is high enough to warm the world.
It also helps to be out of the forest.
-
The ride takes us over a
number of rolling hills.
-

-
More reflections on Lake
Pearson.
-
There has been absolutely no
breeze this morning.
-
Flock Hill Lodge, where we
have Thai Chicken salad with some bread. It is about 1pm. Suddenly
the wind starts to blow quite strongly.
-
After the lunch we have the
steepest hills of the day. However, we have mostly tailwind while
we ride up and down those long and not so gentle slopes.
-
After one of those, Tomi's
back brake gives up. Actually it does not give up, but totally
prevents the wheel turning . There's not much we can do with
hydraulic brakes, but we try: first to fix it, with no avail, and
then to switch the front brake back, but it does not work either.
-
So, we are back where we
started: Tomi coasts the rest of the way using only his front
brakes, which is not easy since most of the 30 kilometers to go is
downhill. Luckily, the wind has turned against us.
-
These rocks look like an
ancient castle ruins.
-
-
-
The climb up to the Porter's
Pass is steep, but from there on we have a gentle stroll downhill.
-
The Sun's setting behind the
now distant mountains.
-
This is where we came from.
-
We reach Springfield little
after 7pm., and have a room upstairs of Springfield Hotel for $80.
-
We share a bottle of
Speight's while showering and then rush downstairs for dinner. We
have salmon salad, served with barley and greens, and a roast of
the day, which happens to be lamb.
-
Then we just goof around
tasting some wines and waiting for our laundry to do itself.
-
Today we ride 80.24K in
5:57'24 (avg 13.4kph, max 49.4kph)
