The morning
opens chilly with clear blues skies.
-
We head to Cafe Neve again
for breakfast (since they serve hot oats), but it is closed due to
kitchen malfunction. We have breakfast across the street at
Hobnail Cafe, instead.
-
The day starts with a climb
out of Fox Glacier.
-
We reach Franz Joseph
Glacier at 11am. after combating three major hills.
-
Thereafter we have some
sunshine,
-
-
and some drizzle and rain.
-
The wind varies, but mostly
we have tailwind.
-
Eventually the sun comes out
again.
-
In Whataroa we meet a young
Dutch couple with a small child, who are just half way of their
4-month bicycle trip in NZ.
-
Tomi's back brake (he has
disk brakes) starts getting cranky, and we have no idea what to do
with it.
-
-
-
Before Hari Hari we climb to
Mt Hercules, which is really nice: the ascend is not too steep and
the road is beautiful.
-
We overnight at Hari Hari
Motor Inn, and while dining (white bait and Wild West Coast
venison), we run our regular laundry chores. Finally we also learn
how white bait, a dish commonly available in South Island, is
prepared: the tiny fish are baked into an omelette.
-
Later at night some locals
come to talk to us and wonder why we don't rely on more modern
technology when travelling. No matter how hard we try to explain
our differing philosophy, they don't get it.
-
Sodium fluoroacetate is used
to control Common Brushtail Possum population, an invasive pests
in NZ.
Today we ride 82.32K in
5:35'19 (avg 14.7kph, max 42.00kph)
