Mossburn Railway Hotel in
the morning sunshine. Since the hotel's cereal breakfast is quite
poor, we stop at Bracken Hall, a souvenir shop combined with a
cafe, for breakfast since hotel's continental breakfast is pretty
poor.
-
Our next stop
is at Five Rivers for coffee and fruit salad.
-
And the
following one in Athol at Lazybones Cafe.
By the way, New
Zealand is a great place for bicycle tourers, not only because it
is sparsely populated, comes with a gorgeous landscape and
comfortable weather, and even small towns have lovely sandwich
and coffee shops, but hey also have public toilets.
-
At Lazybones we
have some more coffee and veggie quiche with salad.
-
We have a nice stroll to
Garston.
-
Garston Hotel self-claims to
be the most inland hotel in New Zealand.
-
In Garston our luck changes
and we struggle the last 30 kilometers to a strong head wind that
is dangerously gusty at times.

The regular rail traffic
ceased operations on this Kingston Branch in 1937, but was resumed
as a heritage service when Kingston Flyer started the trips
between Kingston and Lumsden in 1971, but ended again in 1979
because of flood damage.
-
There was several attempts
to revive the historic railway service in the late 20th
and the early 21st century, but eventually in 2009 the
train was put up for sale.
-
We get a cabin at Kingston
Motel and Holiday Park for NZ$80.
-
-
After starting two loads of
laundry, we have lunch at Kingston Corner Cafe and Bar: fish burger
and beer. This place is about to change ownership in the next few
days.
-
Some retro campers in
Kingston Holiday Park.
-
Kingston Flyer Tavern and
Cafe.
-
Minted lamb salad and
stuffed chicken with mashed potatoes and salad, with Aussi Shiraz
(Tyrrell 2006).
-
On our way back to the
Holiday Park, we enjoy the sights of a gorgeous sunset (despite
the sandflies that are eating us alive)
-
Today
we ride 63.4K in 4:08'40 (avg 15.2kph, max 41.4kph)
