Alpine botanic garden at Col du Lautaret (second visit)

Our weekend plans had to be revised since I broke my fourth toe on Friday night. So, no running and long hikes for a while. I did manage to try on new MTB shoes, so next week’s bicycle tour is still in the plans.

Since the weather was so gorgeous, we drove to University of Grenoble’s alpine botanic garden at Col du Lautaret.  The area is familiar for us, since we’ve spent several winter vacations there, but seldom have we been there during other seasons, especially in the Summer. We visited the garden three years ago in the end of the season, after a dry Summer, and there weren’t many flowering plants then, but now it was quite lovely — so many different colors!

The garden was founded in 1899 and at its current location it has been since 1919. Currently there were a lot of improvement / reconstructions works going on. The garden is not huge, but there is a lot to explore from alpine regions on all continents. Even if it is located on a mountain slope, most of the garden is wheelchair accessible.

We returned to Grenoble a different, a lot longer route, via Briançon, Gap, Corps, and La Mure. Before that we had lunch by a small pond at Le Casset, a tiny village where we’ve gone skiing in several winters.
