Vaujany and Le Tour

After the fourth week of the heat wave we escaped the town again, this time to Vaujany in the canton of Bourg d’Oisans, not far from Des 2 Alpes where we were two weeks ago. Beside enjoying cooler mountain air our weekend getaway had another purpose, namely to watch the 20. stage of Le Tour De France as they passed Oz on their way from Modane to Alpe d’Huez.

On our first morning we headed out for a trail run to Cascade de la Fare. It was not a long run (some 6km) but involved some climbing and a freezing misty shower when we reached the waterfall.

In the early afternoon we started walking from Vaujany (at 1380m) down to Lac du Verney (at 725m). It was a 5.5-kilometer walk one way. We reached the lake right when the caravan was passing.

After an hour of waiting in the scorching sunshine we saw the first riders; there is the leading rider (Thibaut Pinot) in the first photo after the caravan, and the trailing rider (we think) in the last photo on the left. After the tour had passed we walked back up to Vaujany. Fortunately there were many water fountains by the road, since it had been quite a hot day.

On our last morning after checking out from the accommodation at Les Valmonts (which we booked through AirBnb, but it really is a professional lodging), we headed out for an all-day hike to Col de Couard at 2227 meters.

The ascent from the village was steep, but soon became quite gentle until we reached the rocky patch before the final climb to the pass. From there the trail turned really tricky, sloping steeply to various directions. We turned back, since we really did not know what to expect (and we had to take the same trail down anyway).
