July on Rails and Trails: Kangaslampi

We spent two weeks at Tomi’s parents’ house in Kangaslampi. These weeks were the most relaxing time of our vacation/workation; we didn’t need to be anywhere particular, and we didn’t need to do anything special. We went for early morning runs, then worked through the day, watch tennis and athletics, and did some nice hikes on weekends. And of course we cooked all our meals. In the beginning we had  couple of rainy and rather cold days — one early morning run comprised of 4am. emergency dash to salvage our laundry from downpour that started very quickly. The funny thing was that we both listened to raindrops for a while until it dawned to us that our clothes were drying outdoors.

After those first couple of days, temperature started rising and the days became quite hot; fortunately the house we stayed at was shaded by trees so it never got miserable indoors, at least not to us. The first run took us to Pisamaniemi and the brand new EU funded BBQ pavilion at the guest harbor. A nature trail with sign posts and picnic places, financed with the same funds, will be created in the nearby Itkonsaari.

The second, longer run took us to the old Kangaslampi railway station that is a private residence these days. The run started cloudy and cool, and ended sunny and scorching. There was nothing spectacular about the scenery.

There were a couple of shorter runs in the next days, but the photos were too unimpressive to be posted. Our final run took us a little farther in Pisamaniemi.

That sums up the first part of our stay in Kangaslampi, almost all pictures being from the morning runs. The remaining posts will be about our hikes, and the one-night visit to the summer house on the island in Viljolahti, as well as our city tour of historic Varkaus.
