Bicycling in Iceland
(July 16 - August 4, 2008)

We spent three weeks bicycling in Iceland. This was our first great trip since our wonderful journey in Alaska three years ago. This also differed from our previous bicycling tours in one sense: we made very little if any preplanning on the route. Instead, we relied on the fact that, like Alaska, Iceland does not have many roads to choose from, and most of the inland roads are dirt, and practically impassable until July or later, and after that, some of them are only accessible by a 4W drive.

This was a huge mistake: we should have known better that the strong gusty wind can make riding a nightmare whichever road one chooses. At times, even walking the bikes was impossible. This made us change our plans several times during the trip.
